Located in the far southern reaches of the Indian Ocean, these sub-Antarctic islands are home to glaciers, volcanic peaks, and massive colonies of seals and penguins. There are no permanent residents, only a handful of scientists and military personnel who rotate in and out. The journey here is brutal, but the payoff?
