Ethiopia’s Simien Mountains are an untamed, dramatic wonderland often overlooked by travelers. With sheer cliffs, towering peaks, and deep valleys, the landscapes here rival the Grand Canyon—but with far fewer visitors. The region is home to rare wildlife, including the Gelada baboon, Ethiopian wolf, and Walia ibex, which can be spotted roaming freely. The multi-day treks through the highlands, passing ancient villages and dramatic ridges, provide some of Africa’s most rewarding hiking experiences. The Simien Mountains remain a hidden gem for adventurers craving epic landscapes and raw, untamed beauty. Best time to visit: October–March for the best hiking conditions.
