The Dallol Volcano in Ethiopia’s Danakil Depression is one of the hottest, most extreme places on Earth, and its landscape is nothing short of alien. Bubbling acidic pools, neon green and yellow mineral deposits, and rust-colored salt formations give it the look of a toxic wasteland on some distant exoplanet. The air is thick with sulfur, and the ground is an ever-changing palette of electric colors. If an interstellar research team landed here, they might think they had reached Venus.
