38 Places Where Nature Looks Straight Out of a Sci-Fi Movie

34. The Great Blue Hole, Belize: An Abyss into Another Dimension

New research from samples taken from Belize's famous "Blue Hole" suggests the collapse of the Mayan empire may have been caused by a century-long drought. Photo Credit: Wikimedia Commons @The TerraMar Project

Off the coast of Belize lies the Great Blue Hole, a colossal underwater sinkhole over 300 meters across and 124 meters deep. From above, this perfectly circular, deep blue abyss looks like a giant eye staring from the ocean floor or a portal to an underwater dimension. Formed during past ice ages when sea levels were much lower, it's now a world-renowned diving spot, revealing giant stalactites and stalagmites in its depths. Its sheer scale and mysterious appearance evoke the kind of massive, enigmatic structures often imagined in deep-space sci-fi epics.
