Set on the vast, blinding white expanse of Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni, the original Hotel de la Sal was a novelty: a hotel made almost entirely of salt blocks, including the furniture. Built in the 1990s directly on the salt flats, it drew curious travelers—but poor sanitation and environmental concerns led to its closure. Now abandoned, its surreal silhouette still stands under the high-altitude sun, slowly eroding into the salt around it. Visitors can approach the structure as part of guided tours, experiencing the ghost of an eccentric idea baked into one of the most alien landscapes on Earth.
