18. St. Joseph's Chapel – The Underground Church of New York City

Hidden beneath the streets of Lower Manhattan, St. Joseph’s Chapel is one of the most unique places of worship in America. Originally built in 1916, this small Catholic chapel was a refuge for first responders during the 9/11 attacks. Located inside a residential building in Battery Park City, the chapel was beautifully redesigned in 2005 with a striking mural commemorating firefighters and emergency workers. Its underground location and powerful history make it a remarkable site of faith and resilience.
