In northern Taiwan lies one of the most bizarre modern ruins in Asia: the San Zhi UFO Houses. Built in the late 1970s as a luxury vacation resort for U.S. military officers stationed in East Asia, these pod-like, pastel-colored structures were meant to symbolize a futuristic utopia. However, after a series of construction accidents, financial losses, and rumors of bad luck, the project was abruptly abandoned before completion. The alien-looking domes, resembling flying saucers stacked on stilts, became a cult destination for urban explorers and photographers. Though many of the pods were eventually demolished in 2008, their eerie memory lingers as a symbol of failed utopias and architectural oddities.
