30. Choquequirao, Peru: Machu Picchu’s Bigger Sister

Often referred to as the “sister city” of Machu Picchu—but larger and far less visited—Choquequirao sits high in the cloud forests of southern Peru. Built by the Incas in the 15th century, it shares many of the same architectural features as its famous sibling: terraced hillsides, ritual plazas, and sweeping mountain views. Reaching Choquequirao requires a multi-day trek, which keeps the crowds away and the experience intimate. Llamas are even etched into its terrace walls. As archaeologists continue to excavate, the site grows in scope and significance—offering one of the last untouched wonders of the Incan world.
