Somalia remains an extremely dangerous country due to ongoing armed conflict, a high risk of terrorist attacks, and pervasive piracy in its coastal waters. Civil unrest, clan-based violence, and kidnapping are common. Government control is limited outside of Mogadishu, and even within the capital, risks are high. The U.S. government maintains a "Level 4: Do Not Travel" advisory, citing the severe threats to life and safety. Consular assistance is extremely limited, and all travel to Somalia is strongly advised against.
