Unlike the hilltop fortresses, Aigues-Mortes is a perfectly preserved medieval walled city in the Camargue region of southern France, built on flat marshland. Commissioned by King Louis IX (Saint Louis) in the 13th century as France's first Mediterranean port, its impressive rectangular walls and towers remain largely intact. You can walk the entire perimeter of the ramparts, enjoying panoramic views over the vast salt flats and pink flamingos. Its unique location and powerful historical significance as a departure point for crusades make it a captivating, almost otherworldly, medieval marvel.
