Deep within Alaska’s vast Wrangell-St. Elias National Park stand the striking red buildings of the Kennecott Mines, a National Historic Landmark. This once-booming copper mining town, operational in the early 20th century, was abandoned in 1938 when the ore ran out. Perched dramatically above glaciers and surrounded by towering peaks, its massive mill building and other structures are slowly weathering in the harsh Alaskan elements. Nature is steadily encroaching, offering a breathtaking example of industrial ambition dwarfed by raw, untamed wilderness.
