Nestled high in the Colorado Rockies, Independence was founded in 1879 after gold was discovered in the area. For a brief time, it flourished as a bustling mining town, but the harsh mountain winters made life difficult, and by the 1890s, it was nearly deserted. Today, visitors can explore its well-preserved wooden cabins, old mining structures, and a breathtaking alpine landscape that contrasts its eerie emptiness. Unlike other ghost towns, Independence was never burned or demolished, leaving its original structures almost untouched—a hauntingly beautiful relic of the Wild West.
