While Jeddah's airport serves general traffic, its dedicated Hajj Terminal is an architectural masterpiece designed specifically to accommodate the millions of pilgrims arriving for the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and completed in 1981, its most striking feature is the massive, open-air, tent-like roof structure composed of conical fiberglass units supported by steel pylons.
