Deep in the Amazon rainforest of Peru, there is a river so hot that it boils. The Shanay-Timpishka River, also called the “Boiling River of the Amazon”, maintains temperatures reaching up to 200°F (93°C)—hot enough to instantly poach small animals that fall in. What makes this river even more mysterious is that it isn’t near any known volcanic activity, baffling scientists for years. Locals believe the river is sacred and guarded by spirits, while geologists think underground geothermal vents may be heating the waters. Either way, this steaming, fog-covered river winding through the jungle is one of the strangest natural wonders on Earth.
