A gory red waterfall pouring from the ice of Antarctica? It sounds like a horror movie, but it’s real. The Blood Falls in Antarctica get their deep crimson color from iron-rich, oxygen-deprived water that has been trapped beneath a glacier for millions of years. When the water finally surfaces, it oxidizes instantly, creating a shocking red hue against the stark white ice. Scientists believe this phenomenon offers clues to life on other planets, as it’s one of the most extreme environments on Earth.
