12 Eerily Beautiful Ghost Towns That Will Haunt Your Wanderlust

12. Rummu, Estonia – The Sunken Prison

Rummu Quarry Lake is known for its crystal clear water (due to which the lake has earned the nickname "Light Blue Lagoon") & its interesting history. The quarry behind Murru prison was once completely dry. Limestone was mined there through the ages. P. Photo Credit: Wikimedia Commons @Rita Helisma

Unlike other ghost towns, Rummu’s ruins are not just abandoned—they’re underwater. Once a Soviet labor camp and prison, Rummu was flooded when the prison was abandoned, creating a turquoise-blue lake that submerged the crumbling buildings. Today, half-drowned watchtowers and prison walls stick out from the crystal-clear waters, making Rummu one of the most surreal and eerily beautiful ghost towns in the world. It has become a popular diving destination, where explorers can swim through a forgotten Soviet-era prison lost beneath the waves.
