While the chaos of Delta Tau Chi is more commonly associated with the University of Oregon, Reed College’s influence is often overlooked. Screenwriter Harold Ramis based much of Animal House’s anarchic college spirit on Reed, his alma mater—known for its intense intellectual culture and eccentric student body. Though Reed didn’t host filming, its legacy pulses through the film’s DNA. The academic rigor and unapologetic nonconformity of the real Reed gave the film’s satire a backbone.
